Our History
Open Table United Church of Christ organized as First Congregational Church on August 23, 1839. During its history, the church has undergone name changes, consolidations with other congregations, and separations to form other churches. After re-examining all aspects of its identity, the church re-organized as Open Table United Church of Christ in 2017.
In 2003, the church became an Open and Affirming congregation, making a public statement that all people who identify as LGBTQ+ are welcome into the full life and leadership of the church. The church was one of the first in the area to affirm and perform same-sex marriages.
In 2015, Open Table UCC redefined its vision. Congregants explored deeply, listened carefully, and envisioned the impact they could make in Ottawa and the surrounding communities. Hence, Open Table advocates for and serves those often ignored, provides a safe space for those with more questions than answers, and welcomes those seeking a community of faith.
Open Table also streamlined its operating structure. Its governing body, known as the Leadership Table, consists of five members and handles the business decisions of the church. As a result, congregants spend less time in meetings and more time in hands-on service.
The church is proud of its history. Since inception, Open Table has stood up for people facing systemic barriers. It is committed to the United Church of Christ’s ideals of diversity, compassion, freedom, and justice.
The United Church of Christ maintains full communion with other Protestant denominations and recognizes the two sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.
